The Iceland Spar/Optical Calcite in magick and healing

    The Calcite mineral/crystal is the most stable polymorphous form of the Calcium carbonate (common limestone), and is created from the amorphous precursor, that is poorly arranged CaCO3. It’s most commonly transparent to mildly opaque, but can occur in variety of other colors. It has white streak, hardness number 3 on the Moss’ scale and vitreous to pearly luster.

     The clear Quartz variety (which this article will deal with),  that is the single crystals of Clear Quartz variety known as “Iceland Spar” exhibit a not so common property of birefringence, or double refraction. That is, it can slip the rays of light in two, hence objects observed to it may appear as doubled. [1]

     While not hidrosolubile, like most other Calcium carbonate varieties, it dissolves in acids, even the diluted ones. Some optically active Iceland spars, may if dipped in water for too long, develop certain dull lines in specific spots and thus become more opaque in appearance, as opposed to the usual transparent ones.

     It’s found and mined pretty much worldwide, and is readily available in the crystal shops most of the time.

and have properties of the Yellow Calcite and properties of Optical Calcite

 

Use in crystal therapy

     The uses of Calcite in healing, on all the levels of the being (physical, ethereal, mental, emotional according to crystal therapy) are generally uniform for all the varieties of the stone, some having additional uses due to their colour.

     In that sense, for example, the Blue Calcite acts as blood pressure regulator, that is it lowers the heightened blood pressure, releases pain and soothes the nerves, physically and mentally. The Green one is really good in treatment of fevers, inflammations, such as arthritis, cleans the body from the bacteria, treats burns and regulates the activity of the adrenal glands. The red one, for example, is very good for curing the    constipation. The clear calcite is very good for treating eyes, improving eyesight, inspiring growth (both on spiritual and physical level) and clearing the mind. [2]

     All of the Calcites, regardless of the colour, will improve the following physiological processes and treat the following conditions:

·         Helps absorption of Calcium into the bones, dissolves calcifications (pathological ones), strengthens the joints and bones in general. It’s very helpful in securing the healthy and proper development of skeletal tissue/system in kids.

·         Helps cleaning the excretory organs/systems

·         Helps blood coagulation and tissue healing and regeneration

·         Relieves migraine

·         Heals the eyes

·         Removes tension

     The last three are particularly associated with the Clear / Optical Calcite or Iceland Spar, even though that all the Calcite exhibit those properties.

     Crystal essence / elixir made from the Clear Calcite / Iceland Spar, is a considered a cure-all, that is it energizes and cleanses physical and spiritual bodies, kick-starts the healing process, and is excellent to treat the digestive system conditions and skin conditions topically. The Essence made from the Yellow or Golden calcite* is refreshing, energizing and said to broaden the spiritual awareness.

     Mentally, it’s very useful in the studying process, as it strengthens the memory, analytic skills and helps to filter relevant from irrelevant information. It dissolves the stress, replacing it with the serenity. It defeats laziness, and helps one restore faith in themselves. [3]

Use in magick

     Clear Calcite, and particularly the optical variety, is used in magick, to double the strength of spells [4] or otherwise empower magickal and spiritual work. For these purposes it’s either held during ritual and spell work or placed on altars.

     It can also bring clarity of the mind, better understanding of abstract concepts and ideas, such as omens, visions, peculiar dreams and so on. When mediated with or worn, or placed under pillow, it can induce visions, and premonitions, and it will raise spiritual awareness.

     Some people place Optical calcite in over their wallets, or on top of some money to entice it to “to grow” multiplying by two, constantly, in a way.

     It’s believed to be able to “draw the light” into the soul. This use could be associated with the belief that it was a stone that the Vikings used for navigation on cloudy days, due to the stone’s effect of polarization. In that sense, it’s still believe to be helpful in helping the soul find the light, and spirituality, and even curing the “susto” ( “Soul loss” ) by bringing it back to the body, although for the last, the black Calcite is used.

     There is a somewhat old belief (the stone’s use in magick is relatively young, compared to many of the stones used in magickal work) that it can cast illusions. For such purposes the stone had to undergo specific ritual preparations, such to be left in the graveyard during the night of the Full Moon, and be rubbed with juice of the Belladonna, among other.

    Being that it’s a good stone for communication and understanding notions with double meaning, it’s suitable for Truth spells as well. Finally, it’s held to me magickally curative as well, hence why it’s essence is believed to be a sort of a cure all.

     Here are some of the magickal correspondences for the Clear (and Optical) Calcite:

·         Planetary ruler: Moon

·         Elemental ruler: Water

·         Numerical correspondence: 8

·         Energy: receptive

·         Birthstone of: Cancer

·         Time of the Year: Imbolc, Blue moon* 

·         Angelic ruler: Gabriel the Archangel

To empower spells, and gain spiritual power

     Place a piece of Optical Calcite on your altar during your spiritual work. For this purpose it really goes well with the Amber and Spectrolite, so you can combine them. You can arrange them in an auspicious pattern, such as pentagram, if using more stones, or you can place a piece on a plate alongside a purple or white candle, dressed with the “Master key” oil, and an old skeleton key, and a piece of your own hair, nail,  or drop of your own blood, and burn daily and pray for increased spiritual powers.

Physical body change spell

     There is a spell,  prominently circulating on the internet, used to help change body  part, or the shape of the body in general. While some may struggle with the notion of it being even possible, the spell is basically programing a crystal, to do a specific magickal work. Being that the crystal atoms are organized in a uniform patter, making nearly perfect, symmetric geometrical figures as they grow, this makes perfect sense. It’s a matter of transfer magick. The original spell uses Quartz  Crystal, but being that Iceland Spar work on bones, muscles and helps growth where needed, I think that the Iceland Spar, particularly those cut into cubes or rhombs are ideal for this type of spell. I’d also suggest burning an orange candle when performing the spell for the first time, and each day afterwards, a bit until it’s burnt all the way down.

     The spell instructions are as follow, just replace Quartz with the Iceland Spar:

“Procedure: Take the small piece of paper and write your name on it. Draw on it what body or body part you want changed and what you want it to look like. The picture could show the entire body or just the part.

Now hold the paper in your hands and imagine the body/part changing from what it looks like now to what you want it to look like.

Then fold it up any way you like and tie it to the crystal. Then once more visualize the body part changing.

Put it away and every evening until the body is changed take it out and visualize it changing again.

When the change is done tear the paper up and scatter it to the wind.

This spell is very good for changing aspects you don't like. It took a few days to see results so don't expect an over nighter” [6]

 

The White essence

     My personal formula for a cure-all type of potion with Clear Calcite**

     Using spring water, create an essence with the Clear Quartz and the clear Calcite Crystals. Strain. Add some Holy Water. Read the Psalm 142^nd over it. Drink some to heal, remove pain and restore health and energy.

Mamemaki ritual and the Setsubun folklore

     February is crawling upon us, this year having an extra day too. It’s a month when we celebrate the “Imbolc” or “Candlemas” , and it’s a month that is thought to precede the arrival of the spring, and announces it, in spiritual thought. Indeed, for those parts of the planet that are blessed with seasons ( lol ), it does mark a period of more fair, if a bit moody weather. It already “smells” like spring where I am. The Snowbells are probably out already too, and soon the Saffron flowers, Buttercups and Daisies will follow, if this weather keeps up.

    Therefore, it’s hardly a surprise that the many civilizations and cultures associate it with the arrival of the spring and the end of the “dark” part of the year. The day lengthens, and people divine weather by signs. Make Imbolc Maiden beds, and do rituals to chase away the bad luck, and misfortune and replace it with the good luck. In thoughts of some civilization, it’s pretty much the actual New Year’s celebration. A good example is the Setsubun, a day that marks the begging of the spring in Japan.

    Setsubun significance and rituals

    Setsubun is a religious and public holiday (although not a national holiday) in Japan, commemorating seasonal division, and the begging of the spring, modeling after “Tsuina” an older Chinese custom that influenced the Setsubun rituals and customs. [1]

    It’s celebrated on the 3^rd or 4^th   of the February, the day before the start of the spring, according to Lunar calendar of Japan. Some of the customs and celebrations date back to the 13^th century [2]

    The festivities include dancing, singing, throwing roasted soy beans, money inside envelopes, candy, treats, glitter, and religious ritual intended to deter and banish evil spirits, and draw fortune. The last is associated with the belief that, much like in the case of the European Samhain, or Midsummer, the veils between the worlds are thin on this day. Another example of similar notion taking important part of the holiday lore,  is the Chinese ghost month, of the Hungry Ghost month . And the other important lore of the Setsubun is focused on drawing the fortune. Hence the rituals with throwing lucky and auspicious things, namely “fuku mame” ( lit. “lucky beans” ) , which are roasted soybeans, or in some parts of Japan peanuts, although the latter is much less frequently used. So in that sense, Setsubun in much of a New year type of spiritual time, and is ideal  for cutting ties with the misfortune, disease, and damaging, and replacing it with health, fortune and helpful.

      Traditional Sake with ginger is drank during this festival, and some of the roasted soybeans are eaten, traditionally the number of beans eaten corresponds the number of the age of person, or the number of the age of person plus one for luck. The bean throwing ritual, also known as “Mamemaki” can be performed in the temples, at the public ceremonies, or at homes in the family circle, or both. It’s customary for people to get together on this day and often the celebrities and sumo-wrestlers are invited to take part in public celebrations.

     Sardine heads are a peculiar choice of an amulet, by Japanese people, hung on the doors alongside the branches of Holly, tied with a knotted rope on Setsubun, so that they deter the evil spirits from entering the premises. Sometimes soybean husks are hung alongside the fish head. In some more archaic rituals, the sardine heads, well dry, and old wood were burnt, and smoke was wafted to chase away the evil spirits, often accompanied by sounds of drums. Although archaic, these types of rituals are still practiced today in some parts. [3]

    

     The Mamemaki ritual

     This ritual is done, to repel the Oni demons, a blue or red-headed troll like creatures from Shintoism lore, believed to bring diseases, misfortune and other bad things to people. Reportedly, the soybeans, while raw hard, and pretty much inedible, by being processed by fire become edible and symbolize thus the conquering of hard, dangerous Oni demons. In that sense, the ritual of throwing and then eating the beans, is like the fire which softens them. Thrown at the demons, they are symbols of their defeat. So there’s a bit of   sympathetic magick in the rite. Also, all beans are considered lucky in Japanese folklore, hence the inclusion of such in a ritual that both repels and drives away evil.

      The  very ritual is typically described in the following manner:

“On Setsubun, each household loads up asakemasu, the wooden box in which sake is sometimes served, with roasted daizu, or soybeans. Then the head of the household (or a male in the household whose Chinese zodiac animal matches that particular year) throws handfuls of beans outside of the front entrance while chanting, “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (“Demons outside, good luck inside”).

Sometimes the rest of the household chants along, “Gomottomo, gomottomo” (“That’s right, that’s right”) as he performs this task; some, especially the kids, play the part of oni by donning paper masks and running from the bean-thrower. This ritual is called mamemaki, or the scattering of beans. Afterward, everyone eats the same number of roasted beans as their age for luck.” [4]

     So we see that the beans are thrown either around the houses, temples, or at the person/people wearing the Oni masks. The last is a typical roleplay ritual, not completely unlike those performed by Wiccans for example. Sometimes these beans are thrown vigorously through the open door, the phrases is spoken/yelled and then the doors are violently and swiftly shut close. This is a practice common for many spirit banishing spells, or spells and rituals that symbolize cutting ties with something bad.

     As an interesting side note; a somewhat comparable ritual with beans, was done during the Roman Saturnalia ( Sol Invictus ) , for the similar purpose, only that the ancient Romans were driving away the evil spirits of the dead, known as Larvae and Lemuri. Incidentally, or not, this was also a celebration which is similarly considered a New Year’s celebration festivity.

     Ehoumaki, the huge lucky sushi roll

     Another, more popular and urban tradition associated with the Setsubun holiday in Japan, is eating the fas sushi roll ( “futomaki” ) which contains 7 ingredients, on this day and it’s called “Ehoumaki” ( Ehou being pronounced much like the “echo” ) and must be ate facing a specific lucky direction.

     The ehoumaki may be purchased in the stores,  as they are readily available in time of the holiday but there are some requirements that must be met in order for it to work it’s lucky charm; it must contain seven ingredients, if possible ones reputed to be lucky, it must not ( under any circumstances ) be cut, and it must be ate in silence, facing a specific lucky direction which changes from year to year. [5]

Don’t forget that about Imbolc/Candlemas  and Valentine’s Day  , which are also in February.

Hoodoo tricks for bad neighbors

     In an ideal world, we could all get along. At least enough to live peacefully with one another in the same area. But alas, this world has been almost the exact opposite of the ideal, lately, and all the global issues have caused people to be even more selfish, belligerent and intolerant. "Love thy neighbor" indeed, so rather than starting a war with them, if they are super nasty, try some magickal "diplomacy" instead. 

     Someone asked me, about advice on how to deal with a nasty neighbor, that’s attacking them spiritually. Instead of answering directly, I thought I’d write a little something about it instead, and expand the topic to bad neighbors in general. Even If your neighbors do not practice magick, they can be equally, or oftentimes; even more obnoxious, malicious, petty and plainly irritating.

     Hoodoo, as a practical system of magick, or “spiritual work” rather, is opulent in terms of methods of dealing away with nasty people, that live near You, work with You etc.

     Even though the Hoodoo, as a system of magick, does not   “officially” observe magickal timing, as practiced in ceremonial/higher magick, many rootworkers have adopted the practice of doing spiritual work  in accordance to magickal correspondences of days and hours of the week and similar, when possible. In this particular case, any work intended to banish nasty neighbors, repel them or protect from them should be done on Tuesday or Saturday, preferably during the hour of Mars. If You are like myself, and like to preform spiritual work and magick in accordance to Moon phases, this type of work should be done during the waning  phase of the Moon, “dark of the Moon”, or ( in case of protection for example, If You just aim to protect yourself and Your household ) on a Full Moon’s night.

     So here are some Hoodoo tricks and works, that are done to keep bad neighbors away, or make them move, or run away.

Mind your own business charm

    Place “Mind Your own business” ( Soleirolia soleirolii ) plant on some windowsill in your house, or close to a window. Alternatively, you can place it in your yard too, or on your front porch

    Back this up, by hanging a pouch filled with Elder (berries, or flowers, or dry herb) on each of the doors leading into your home, or on your front and back doors.

    Place a new, unused, kitchen knife, with a black handle, underneath your doormat, as you say: “Stay away from my home N.N. in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Amen!” three times.

    This should keep the person away, and prevent them from bothering you.

Disarm your enemy

     If you don’t wish to drive away, or make a bad neighbor move, but rather, make sure that they are powerless against You, here’s a quick and easy trick.

     Inscribe a black candle with their name using a pin, and tie a black yarn around it. Dress it with “victory over evil” oil or alternatively “Essence of bend over” or “Master root” oil. Roll the dressed candle in Epsom salts, just enough to cover it lightly. Place the candle on a small tray or saucer ( like a tea cup, or coffee cup saucer ), and burn it on Your toilet tank ( or in a bathtub ) for nine nights a bit, as You declare that the N.N. cannot harm You, and is powerless against You. Some people would even curse the person during such ritual and use offensive words. If You are of such “temperament” , go ahead and add a few curse words.  On the 9^th day let the candle burn all the way down, and carry the remaining material to some crossroads in silence, or flush it down the toilet. I myself would at all opt for the crossroads option, if anyhow possible, or even burying the remaining material in the person's yard. It is done. 

Hoodoo tricks to prevent a person from coming back or entering the home

    Originally, these Hoodoo tricks, were used to prevent nasty people, or witches who wanted to harm you and your family; from coming back to your house. Which means, for this to work, the person must visit you at least once. But they need not to do it by their own choice, you can still invite them, that one time.   

1.       If the troublesome neighbor, is also a practitioner, or suspected to be so, let them come and visit you once. When they leave, throw a handful of table salt behind them and say 3x : “In the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, do not come back here anymore” . This is both a “diagnostic” measure and a warding, for if the person is really a witch, that’s intent on harming you magically, they will not be able to come back across the “salted” path. [1] Against unwanted guests, it’s said that it’s enough to throw a handful of salt mixed with Sulphur behind them in a similar fashion.

2.       If the troublesome neighbor, may not be a witch, but you don’t want them to come back anymore to your home, or yard, regardless, have them come over once, like explained in the previous method. Once they leave, sprinkle some salt around the chair they were sitting on, some more salt on the very chair, and some in front of your doorstep. Then sweep it all with a broom, sweeping away from you, towards the entrance doors. Once at the main doors sweep the salt outdoor, and then sweep it away with the salt you’ve sprinkled on your doorstep. If You are close to the main street, keep sweeping until the salt is swept to the street, If not contain the swept salt in a tray and carry it to the street or the crossroads. Once there, pour the salt on the street, or crossroads cursing the person’s name and commanding them to never ever come back to Your house. [2]

3.       To prevent all kind of nasty, ill-intended people from entering your home; you can do a trusted, powerful Red brick line Hoodoo trick. Pulverize some Red Brick, and some morning, preferably on Saturday, wash Your home floors with floorwash made with Salt, Saltpeter and your own first urine of the day [3] , doing this in complete silence. Once done, lay a line of pulverized red brick on your main door’s doorstep, and also in front of your gate, if you have it in your yard. This will prevent ill-intentioned people from stepping into your yard or home.

4.       “To keep your enemies out of your house, put a tablespoonful of vinegar and a tablespoonsful of sulphur in a little can and keep that in the house, and they will never bother you” [4]

Move away and get away Hoodoo works

     There are plethora of tricks root doctors use to make the nasty people move away or get away. And this kind of spiritual work literarily does that, makes people move away from their house, leave the neighborhood, or keep clear from you at all times.  These are more on the “aggressive” side of the spectrum of spiritual work, but cannot really be considered crossing or hexing/cursing, and sometimes are necessity.

     Think of it this way, yes, you will be forcing someone, potentially against their will to leave, but then again you could do this legally as well, with mundane methods.  This way the person will even have more options, and often will even find a more appropriate place for themselves to live. So it can end up being a win – win situation.

     Hoodoo works that aim to accomplish this often employ powders, or jars and bottle spells, sometimes also eggs and laying tricks. For the really nasty people, there are jar and bottle spells which can force them to leave, and I’ve provided an example,  in another post dealing with contained jar and bottle Hoodoo   spells before.  These type of jars and/or bottles are often prepared with Vinegar or Four Thieves vinegars, or hot sauce, or Red Hot Chili peppers, personal concerns of the target or name paper, and are thrown into a running water, or ebbing sea/ocean water.

     As a form of laying tricks, Hoodoo powders are prominently used, and laid in the neighbor’s yard, or their foot tracks, so that they will step over them. The powders which are used for such purposes are:

·         Get away

·         Lost and away

·         Run Dev*l run

·         Bon Voyage

     And sometimes, oddly enough “Hot foot powder”. The last, is though, more of a trend that comes from misinformation of the general practitioners of magick, who use Hoodoo formulas, without precise and clear knowledge on them. Hot foot powder, is more of a crossing and a banishing formula, rather than a formula which is supposed to move someone away from you.

     As a form of “Get away”, or even “Run Dev*l run” sprinkle ( powder ) one can mix Epsom Salts ( teaspoon ), table salt ( a cup ) and some Red peppers [4] I’ve personally found this mixture to be extremely effective for both warding off, and moving away enemies, and negative energy and crossings.

As for the “Lost and away” powder… there is a recipe circulating the internet, which is as follows:

·      *  Graveyard dirt

·      *   Mistletoe dried leaves

·      *  Sulphur

·      *   Orris root

·      *   Sage

All equal parts, pulverized.  [5]

     I don’t know the origins of this particular recipe ( I wish I did ), but it’s quite good. It contains the ingredients that could, in fact, make someone move away.

     More “traditional” Hoodoo “Lost and away powder” formulas, though, will have ingredients  like Dirt Dauber’s nest, and maybe Epsom salts too, as well as almost inevitably Red peppers, which are one of the best choices among the botanical agents to move people or things away, magickally.

     As for the “Bon Voyage formula”, it can be found in this interesting and informative  Examiner’s piece: “Clearing away obstacleswith road opening formulas”  , along with a plethora of other useful info and tips. 

    Deployment of any of these powders; is rather uniform. So, a person is to sprinkle them going backwards from the doorstep of neighbor’s home, blowing from his or hers hand, nine times. 

    Alternatively, one is simply instructed to sprinkle the mess on their neighbor’s front porch, or on their outward-facing footsteps, or down the sidewalk or street, where they will certainly step in it. Hence, a pretty much a standard way of “laying tricks” in Hoodoo magick. If one is to sprinkle the powders on person's doorstep, it may be in form of the letter "X" although this is more typical when a crossing of a kind is due. 

     There is also a curious little formula, with the 3 inch long bay laurel’s branch, which is ritually turned end-to-end specific number of times, starting from the person’s doorstep, towards the street and then tossed into a running water, to make the person move away.

    To conclude here are a few traditional, relatively easy, and powerful tricks used to make someone move away:

1.       Take some dirt from the person’s footprint, and mix it with  powdered dirt dauber’s nest, Epsom salts, and Red pepper. Place it all in a bottle, seal it tight, and throw in into a running water, on Midnight, some night during the wanning Moon phase.

2.       Likewise, in a bottle with 4 thieves’ vinegar, add a whole red pepper, and a personal concern of the neighbor that’s troubling You. Shake it well, calling their name three times, than command them: “In the Name of Father, Son and Holy  Spirt!”  to depart and throw into a running water, or seawater during an ebbing period.

3.       Get a black hen’s egg, perforate the shell, and dry out the contents. Then, add some Dirt dauber’s nest powder in it, write the name of the person You wish to move out on it, and then, in Midnight, smash the egg against the wall of the house where the person lives in to make them move out.
